SUMMARY:Project Scientist on NASA PUNCH Mission Coming to Cal Poly on April 8th
DESCRIPTION:NASA’s newest solar mission\, PUNCH (Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere)\, is transforming how we understand our home in space. Launched last March from Vandenberg Space Force Base\, PUNCH is a constellation of four small satellites flying together in coordinated Earth orbit to make global\, 3D observations of the Sun’s outer atmosphere as it transitions into the solar wind that fills the solar system. PUNCH’s mosaic view fills half the sky with effervescent flows and dynamic eruptions\, connecting the Sun\, the solar wind\, and Earth as never before. \nWednesday\, April 8th from 7-10pmat the Advanced Technologies Lab (Building 7)\, Cal Poly\n\nThis will be a fascinating evening for anyone curious about how the Sun drives space weather\, how scientists study the solar wind\, and how new missions like PUNCH are transforming our understanding of the Sun–Earth connection. All are welcome to attend. Parking ($3/hr) in H-2a (metered spots)\, H-12\, H-16 lots (use the kiosk or ParkMobile App). Here is a parking map for quick reference. Click for more info on this event. \n

SUMMARY:Shadows in Space: Exploring Trojan Asteroids with John Keller
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to host Dr. John Keller\, Director of Fiske Planetarium at CU Boulder\, for a special talk on how stellar occultations reveal the hidden secrets of Trojan asteroids. He’ll also share highlights from Science through Shadows\, a NASA project on eclipses\, transits\, and the PUNCH Mission.

SUMMARY:In-Person Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Time: 7PM \nLocation:\nUnited Methodist Church\nWesley Room\n1515 Fredricks Street\nSan Luis Obsipo\, CA 93405 \nMain Topic: Blazars\, the Most Energetic Particle Accelerators in the Universe\, by Jodi Christiansen \nDescription:\nMost galaxies harbor a supermassive black hole (SMBH) at their core.  Although black holes by themselves do not radiate light\, and cannot be seen by any telescope\, many of these SMBH collect material around them that creates extreme environments.  This material typically forms an accretion disk and a jet of particles.  When the jet of particles is tipped toward the earth\, astronomers call it a Blazar.  The particles in the jet radiate light at all wavelengths. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Jodi Christiansen will  outline the formation of a supermassive black hole and their extreme environment.  She will then talk about the telescopes needed to measure all the wavelengths\, including the VERITAS telescope which she worked on in Arizona.  By combining the results from all of the telescopes\, we are able to measure the physical properties of the jets. \nBiography:\nDr. Jodi Christiansen received her bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College and her PhD from the University of Wisconsin where she specialized in Experimental High Energy Particle Physics.  She then accepted post-doctoral positions at Brandeis University (1993-1998) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1999-2005). During her second post-doctoral position\, she concentrated on several astroparticle experiments\, including AMANDA and SNAP.  For the past 18 years\, she has been a professor at Cal Poly\, San Luis Obispo working in gamma-ray astronomy with the VERITAS collaboration.  She likes to hike\, swim\, and play the violin.  She has also begun to dabble in amateur astronomy. \nDirections:\nWhen you pull into the first driveway for this address\, stay to the right at the Y-intersection of the driveway and follow it down to the lower parking lot. You will see Astronomy signs and people directing you up a flight of stairs and into the room. \n(If you get lost\, circle around the buildings until you see the Astronomy signs for CCAS.) \nThis meeting is in-person only and will not be recorded or live-streamed.\nLight refreshments will be available. \nPlease Contact Us if you have any questions\, and I look forward to seeing you there!
