About the Central Coast Astronomical Society
Welcome to the Central Coast Astronomical Society (CCAS), serving San Luis Obispo County and the Central Coast of California since 1979.
CCAS is a volunteer-run organization dedicated to sharing the wonders of astronomy with people of all ages and experience levels. Whether you’re taking your very first look through a telescope or have been observing the night sky for decades, you’re welcome here.
Our Mission
CCAS exists to make astronomy accessible, engaging, and rewarding. We do this by:
- Hosting public stargazing events and astronomy talks
- Supporting members as they learn observational skills
- Providing hands-on opportunities with real telescopes
- Encouraging curiosity, learning, and community connection
Astronomy can feel intimidating at first. Our goal is to remove those barriers and help people explore the universe with confidence.
A Community for Every Level
Our members come from all walks of life — families, students, retirees, educators, engineers, artists, casual stargazers, and experienced astrophotographers.
Some members enjoy social observing under dark skies. Others focus on imaging, solar observing, or scientific projects. Many are simply curious and want to learn. There is no single “right way” to participate.
Public Outreach & Education
Community outreach has always been central to CCAS. We regularly host:
- Public star parties (these are free and open to everyone)
- Astronomy nights and special events
- Guest lectures by scientists and educators
- School and community observing programs
These events are designed to be welcoming and approachable — no equipment or background required.
Learning by Doing
CCAS believes astronomy is best learned hands-on. Members have access to:
- Telescope help clinics
- Mentorship from experienced astronomers
- A telescope loan program
- Opportunities to participate in observing and research activities
You don’t need to own a telescope to get started — we’ll help you learn first.
Why Astronomy?
We live on a small planet orbiting an ordinary star in the Milky Way galaxy — one of billions of galaxies in an immense universe. Astronomy invites us to explore these vast scales, ask big questions, and better understand our place in the cosmos.
It’s a science, a hobby, and a shared human experience — and one that’s best enjoyed together.
Join Us Under the Stars
If you’re curious about the night sky, we invite you to join us at an upcoming event, subscribe to our email updates, or become a member. No matter where you are in your astronomy journey, CCAS is here to support it.
Clear skies, and welcome!
