Join us for a VIRTUAL Star Gazing Party ONLINE April 18th at 7pm

CCAS Astronomer Kent Wallace and President Aurora Lipper will be taking you on a tour of the night sky so you can star gaze right from home!

Here’s the edited version of the video above:

Did you know that the early-spring  night sky is the least familiar to folks? Usually it’s because the winter storms and spring rains cancel our star gazing events. This time, we’re going to be able to stargaze no matter what the weather is like!  We are going to focus on objects you can see with binoculars or small telescope. (Aurora uses Orion’s UltraViews which are excellent for the price!)

We’ll also show you how to use Star Charts to help you navigate and find objects. You can download the one for April for free here:

During our time together, you’ll be able to interact with Kent, ask questions, and gain insight on the next objects to search for to take your star gazing to the next level. It will be like watching a planetarium star show only from your computer screen!

Feel free to invite all your friends – we can accommodate up to 10,000 people, so invite everyone to join us! This should be a lot of fun! I am really looking forward to it!

We will bring you you a virtual “tour of the night sky” where you can discover, learn, and ask questions as we go along! All you need is an internet connection. You can use an iPad, laptop, computer or cell phone. When 7pm on Saturday night rolls around, click the link below to join our class.

This button will be active when it’s time for our Star Gazing event.

IMPORTANT: You don’t need to install any special software or programs or apps to view this broadcast – all you need to do is click the link below to join the meeting tonight. If you have trouble connecting to the streaming broadcast, here are things you can try:

  1. Click REFRESH to reconnect your page.
  2. Try a different browser, and if that doesn’t work, try an entirely computer or device.
  3. If all else fails, we will be recording this and posting the recording on our website after, so you can watch on your own schedule. We are posting it right back to THIS PAGE so come back anytime to watch it.

BEFORE CLASS STARTS:

I’ve put together two videos you can watch right now to get you ready for our time together. The first is one shows how to use the software that I will be using on Saturday night to show you the night sky:

The second is a video on how to read the Star Gazer’s Almanac, which is a great reference for you if you’re just getting your feet wet with astronomy, and you don’t want to be overwhelmed by too much detail and lost in the numbers. One quick look at this chart, and you’ll be able to tell what’s up in the sky tonight, and get familiar with how things shift and move throughout the year (click here to order yours from Sky & Telescope). You can find that video here:
