Start Here — You’re in the Right Place

You don’t need to be a scientist. You don’t need expensive equipment.
You don’t even need to know where to start.
The Central Coast Astronomy Society (CCAS) has been helping people explore the night sky since 1979 — and we’re here to help you take your first step.
Astronomy is an amazing hobby — but it can feel overwhelming at first. That’s exactly why CCAS exists.

Astronomy feels hard to get into — and that’s normal
Most people who are curious about astronomy run into the same problems:
- “I don’t know what telescope to buy.”
- “I bought a telescope and can’t figure it out.”
- “I don’t know what I’m supposed to be looking at.”
- “I don’t know anyone who does astronomy.”
- “I feel silly asking basic questions.”
You are not alone — and you are exactly who we’re here for.
What CCAS does (and why we’re different)
CCAS is a community of amateur and professional astronomers who believe astronomy should be welcoming, hands-on, social, supportive, and accessible to everyone. We don’t just show you the stars — we help you learn how to explore them yourself.
How to get started (the easy way)
Step 1 — Come to a public event
No experience needed. We have these opportunities:
- Monthly public stargazing events (free, just show up!)
- Astronomy Nights at the SLO Botanical Garden (reservations required)
- Free public lectures and talks (free, includes cookies)
You’ll look through real telescopes, ask questions, and meet people who love helping beginners. See Upcoming Events
Step 2 — Join CCAS
As a member, you get:
- Access to experienced astronomers
- Help choosing and using equipment
- Members-only workshops and observing nights
- Opportunities to borrow telescopes
- A welcoming community that remembers what it was like to be new
Membership gives you support, not pressure. Become a Member
Step 3 — Learn by doing (with help)
This is where CCAS really shines! We offer:
- Beginner telescope workshops
- Eyepiece & accessories guidance
- Intro to astrophotography sessions
- Mentorship opportunities
- Hands-on observing nights
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Interested students & young astronomers
If you’re a high school, Cuesta, or Cal Poly student — or just early in your astronomy journey — CCAS offers:
- Telescope loans
- One-on-one mentorship
- Opportunities to join real research projects
- Experience running public stargazing events
- Connections with professional astronomers
Astronomy is learned best by doing — and by learning alongside others.
Do I need my own telescope?
Short answer: No.
Many members start with binoculars, borrowed telescopes, or no equipment at all. We help you learn before you buy — so you don’t waste money or get frustrated.
What kind of people are in CCAS?
People like you. Families, retirees, students, engineers, artists, first-time observers, lifelong stargazers, and more! Some members love casual observing. Others do astrophotography or scientific research. All are welcome.
