Special Field Trip to Mt. Wilson Observatory!

The Central Coast Astronomical Society is thrilled to announce a special overnight field trip to the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, home of the famous 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes that changed our understanding of the universe.

Trip Plan

  • Departure: Noon from San Luis Obispo (date TBA)

  • Arrival at Mt. Wilson: Evening, with either half night (until 1AM) or all-night observing session (until sunrise)

  • Return: Depart at dawn and return to San Luis Obispo

This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to look through one of the most important telescopes in astronomical history, guided by observatory staff and surrounded by your fellow CCAS members.

Cost

  • Leadership Team Members: CCAS will cover your entire trip cost as a thank-you for your service!

  • General Members: Final cost will depend on transportation and telescope selection, registration cost will include bus travel both ways and observatory fees (and perhaps a private pre-session private tour, a great way to get grounded in the remarkable history of the Observatory and to see the both big telescopes and the solar tower telescope before starting your session.)

Telescope Choice

We’re currently deciding between the historic 60-inch telescope (legendary for public observing) and the famed 100-inch Hooker Telescope (the largest in the world for decades). We’d love your input!
