The Central Coast Astronomical Society is thrilled to announce a special overnight field trip to the historic Mt. Wilson Observatory in Pasadena, home of the famous 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes that changed our understanding of the universe.

Trip Plan
-
Departure: Noon from San Luis Obispo on May 17th, 2026 by charter bus
-
Arrival at Mt. Wilson: Evening to begin our all-night observing session (until sunrise)
-
Return: Depart at dawn on May 18th, 2026 to return to San Luis Obispo by charter bus
This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to look through one of the most important telescopes in astronomical history, guided by observatory staff and surrounded by your fellow CCAS members. Click here for information about what to bring with you for the overnight experience.
Cost
-
Leadership Team Members: CCAS will cover your entire trip cost as a thank-you for your service!
-
General Members: Cost is $300 per person for CCAS members ($400 for non-members). This includes bus travel both ways, observatory fees, and a private pre-session private tour (which is a great way to get grounded in the remarkable history of the Observatory and to see the both big telescopes and the solar tower telescope before starting your session).
Telescope
We will be spending the evening observing through the historic 60-inch telescope (legendary for public observing!). When we take our tour of the facility beforehand, we will also get to visit the famed 100-inch Hooker Telescope (the largest in the world for decades).
Did you know that you can do photography at the eyepiece of the 60-inch telescope? Click for details.
