Join us for an exciting evening exploring one of the most fascinating regions in the universe: the center of our own Milky Way galaxy!
LIVE Talk April 8th at 11am Pacific
This is an online LIVE presentation you can join right from home. (HINT: We are not meeting in person for this event.)
Dr. Anna Ciurlo, an astrophysicist at UCLA, studies the motion of gas and stars near the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. Her work focuses on how material behaves in this extreme environment, helping scientists better understand how black holes grow and interact with their surroundings.
Dr. Ciurlo is part of the research team whose groundbreaking observations helped confirm the existence of a supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, work that contributed to the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics.
In this talk, she will share:
- How we know a black hole exists at the center of the Milky Way
- What happens to gas and stars near a supermassive black hole
- The latest discoveries from ongoing observations of the Galactic Center
- What these findings reveal about black holes across the universe
This is a rare opportunity to hear directly from a researcher working at the forefront of black hole science. All are welcome—no prior astronomy experience needed.
If you’re interested in Black Holes, here’s a quick video from renowned scientist Kip Thorne you can watch before our main session starts:
